Pamela Johnson was born in New York and moved to Austin, Texas 25 years ago. She comes from a creative family background: her great-grandfather designed and built some of the most iconic theaters in America and her mother was also an artist and art teacher who encouraged her children’s interests in the arts. Pamela originally studied for a degree in ceramics, but soon found that mixed media art was her true passion. That passion was fueled by many trips to the Albright Knox Art Gallery which houses one of the finest collections of contemporary art in the world.
After moving to Austin, the artist decided to open a gallery that would focus on providing a showcase for Austin artists’ work. “At that time in no one was really showing and promoting our home grown talent in terms of real contemporary art”. This gallery would continue for 13 years and become the premier showcase for some of the best known artists in Central Texas, and Pamela became it’s best selling artist.
“I have studied all types of painting, as I had a classical painting education; however, I love creating
art where realism is suspended and working and controlling my materials in was seems a random way,
creating uniqe imagery and textures . I use and harness nature’s forces to create subtle layers and textures in the background of my painting. I start by washing thin, watercolor like layers over the canvas or paper in acrylic paint; arcrylic is like glass and once dry won’t mix with the layer beneath it creating depth. Each layer is sealed before the next is laid down. While the paint is drying I manipulate it to make textures. After several layers with this technique I may begin adding collage elements such as very thin rice paper or gold leaf ( a tribute to my great-grandfather’s ornate theaters). I next employ a type of calligraphy effect or gestural painting . Finally, I block the work in, designing the final color scheme. It can take many weeks or months to finish a painting. I paint outside and inside, employing the sun, wind,
rain, water to control their their natural beauty on my canvasses.” Many of the artists’ paintings are inspired by her extensive travels throughout Mexico, where she is inspired by the colorful atmosphere. Pamela also employs glass in some of her work, exploring new ways the material can be used or recycled into precious works of art.
